Nice essay. An example of white people who claim everyone is "equal" now (variation of color blindness) being betrayed by their own feelings. On the news show Nightline, host Ted Koppel asked a panel of white people from Philadelphia's Fishtown neighborhood if they believed black people were treated better than whites now. They all said yes. The panel was assembled several days after a group of whites attacked the home of a black single mother who had just moved into (they qualified for Section 8 housing) Fishtown. Later on in the program, Ted Koppel asked each person a thought experiment: God has appeared to you and said he made a mistake. You weren't supposed to be born white. God has to make things right and make you black, but he wants to be fair. How much should I compensate you for changing your race? Every white person weighing the disadvantages of being black in America asked God for hefty sums in compensation.
