Thoughts on the High School Graduation of My Grand Niece . . .
This is a day you’ve been waiting for! You feel like you’ve been liberated from a particularly tortuous day-to-day prison of reading, writing, and some kind of math you never completely figured out. Yes, school was awful for reasons too numerous to count. In fact, I’ve always wondered how any of us get from kindergarten to graduation alive with a healthy sense of ourselves and the world. But high school graduation is an American rite of passage to adulthood, a tradition that promises much and frightens us — a lot. Thankfully, giving advice is also a tradition built into the mix as this door opens into a new life. So, sit down and listen, girl.
Discover something you love to do and find a way to make money doing it. This doesn’t mean you won’t have to take a job you hate for a while (or now and then) to make this happen but find the work you love and build on a goal of making your avocation your vocation every day. Be confident and don’t give up unless you absolutely want to.
Make your bed. Do it when you get up and you’ll start the day already feeling you’ve accomplished something. Plus, put a few drops of lavender on your pillow and you’ll love getting into it at bedtime.
When someone asks you for help, give it. It is a proven fact that how you behave toward your fellow human beings…
